La Rabosa, our speediest explorer, will accompany you on this trip through lesser-known places well off the beaten track, along the river Ebre and its tributaries. A real adventure on two wheels, where you decide your pace, in surroundings that will impress you at every turn.
We propose a circular route starting in La Ribera d’Ebre, exploring much of the county close up, before cycling on for a taster of the Terra Alta, Matarranya, Baix Aragó, Baix Cinca and Segrià areas. You’ll come back into the county from the north to return to your starting point.
You’ll often be sharing your surroundings with just birds and the odd tractor, as the route takes you through rural settings of outstanding beauty, far from the busier routes. Get your bike ready – we look forward to meeting you!
ITINERARY
With the Between Rivers tour in La Ribera, get ready to cycle through little-known areas on the Ebre at your own pace, with no hurry and in a way to suit your technical abilities.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN FLIX.
Arrival in the town of Flix. Bed and breakfast at the hotel.
DAY 2: THE NORTH OF LA RIBERA BY BIKE.
Get ready to discover the northernmost part of La Ribera on two wheels. This first part of your cycling experience can be adapted in terms of difficulty, choosing to discover the meander near Flix and the Sebes nature reserve, which are flatter, or opting for a harder route taking in the chapel of El Remei and the river of La Cana. A perfect warm-up for the next few days.
DAY 3: TOWARDS MÓRA D’EBRE.
This shorter stage, covering about 25 km, takes you to the Pas de l’Ase, on a spectacular mule track that offers a way through the gorge. The pass itself is not suitable for cycling, but the views are stunning. After this the agricultural track takes you through fields and riverside woodlands to the town of Móra d’Ebre. This is the perfect day to stop off at the wineries of Vinebre and savour their wines and olive oils.
DAY 4: THE LAND OF THE ILERCAVONS ON TWO WHEELS.
Today we propose you immerse yourself in the south-east of the county, as far as Tivissa with its panoramic viewpoint of Castellet de Banyoles, site of the ancient Iberian fortified town of Kum. A route nearly 35 kilometres in length, with stops at some of the DO Montsant wineries near Tivissa.
DAY 5: BETWEEN THE EBRE AND THE CANALETES.
After warming up over the last three days, now it’s time to really pedal to carry on down the river Ebre, through one of its gorges – that of Barrufemes – and head into the mountains. You’ll connect up with the Terra Alta greenway, beside the river Canaletes, and follow it gently uphill as far as Horta de Sant Joan, a place that inspired the artist Pablo Picasso.
DAY 6: FROM ELS PORTS TO FAIÓ.
The stunning landscape of Els Ports is combined with the beauty of the mountain rivers Algars and Matarranya, both of which you’ll be following today to reach the bottom of the reservoir at Riba-roja. The bell tower of the former village of Faió rising out of the water tells us it’s time to head up to the plateau where the modern village is located.
DAY 7: BACK TO LA RIBERA D’EBRE.
To return to our starting point, we suggest joining the river Ebre at Mequinensa, among orchards of fruit trees. After going down to the town of Mequinensa, you’ll climb through fields of cereals to Almatret. And all that remains is to go down the left bank of the river Ebre to get to Flix, passing through the Sebes nature reserve.
DAY 8: DEPARTURE.
Return home.
